Abstract

Artworks, which are one of the elements that accompany time in the dialectic of the past, present
and future, are not only an indication of the political and economic structures of a country, but also
the references of the cultural and social fabric.
In this respect, the necessity of building a society with a high sense of ownership, protection and
maintenance is undisputed, especially in the family education of the individual, the development of
sensitivity, the importance of qualified art education, the instinct of ownership, protection and
maintenance. However, what happened to the artworks with the examples of the negativities that
developed outside of this idealized thought and which have been experienced is the subject of this
study. In this study, the causes and consequences of the attacks and damaging actions which can be
defined as vandalism of the works of art handled with an analytical perspective are discussed. The problem of deliberate / unconscious destruction of works of art is examined especially in terms
of sculpture and ceramic sculpture.
With examples from the world and Turkey, the artistic, scientific, juridical and socio-cultural
requirements of the processes followed after the destructions of the artworks and on this basis the
competence levels of the practices are discussed. At the same time, this study offers suggestive
inferences in a sophisticated way regarding the reasons for existence, necessity and the problem of
existence of artworks
