One of humanity's paramount responsibilities on Earth is to explore and comprehend the perfectly ordered cosmos established by the Almighty Creator. This world we inhabit is replete with countless bounties bestowed by Allah for the benefit of humankind. Humans possess a profound capacity for consciousness and understanding in the face of this vast universe. For believers, every effort and action aimed at grasping and contemplating this world serves as both a stepping stone towards spiritual proximity to Allah and a righteous deed for attaining the abode of the Hereafter.
Humanity's time on Earth is a finite span, stretching from birth until death—this is one's lifespan. We spend this limited journey on Earth, utilizing the opportunities granted by the Creator and filling this period with either good or bad deeds. Ultimately, we will return to our Lord. In Islamic thought, the most fundamental and elucidating information regarding the nature and purpose of worldly life is embedded within the two primary sources of the religion: the Holy Quran and the noble Hadith. These sacred texts thoroughly address the cosmic order, an individual's position in this transient realm, and their ultimate objectives. The Holy Quran instructs individuals to strike a balance between worldly life and the Hereafter. This equilibrium is clearly articulated through divine guidance, advising against neglecting one's legitimate share of worldly life while solely focusing on gains for the afterlife. Consequently, the Holy Quran rejects the complete abandonment of worldly life, instead advocating for a harmonious coexistence of materialism and spirituality.
This study aims to evaluate the concept of "Dunya" (the world) as understood in classical Islamic scholarly works. It examines themes such as the nature of the world, humanity's role in the cosmos, the balance between this world and the Hereafter, and the dimension of trial (imtihan), all from the perspective of the Quran and Hadith. The section headings within this work reflect these core focal points.
