Abstract

Digitalisation and the Industry 4.0 and 5.0 paradigms are fundamentally transforming production practices across design disciplines, thereby making it necessary for academic education models to evolve in parallel with this rapid pace of change. One of the core components of interior architecture education surveying (rölöve) is currently based on processes that can be considered traditional, including manual measurement, two-dimensional (2D) representations, and static three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided design (CAD) focused workflows. However, in the contemporary construction industry, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), photogrammetry, and Internet of Things (IoT) integrations have enabled the development of dynamic “Digital Twin” approaches, which are rapidly becoming a new standard. This study argues that the surveying course must either move away from its traditional structure entirely and adopt innovative approaches, or that this contemporary vision should be radically integrated into the existing educational framework. Within the scope of the research, the surveying-related course contents of undergraduate interior architecture programmes at 25 public universities across Türkiye were examined using document analysis. The findings indicate that the analysed curricula largely remain at a traditional level. The content reviewed suggests that technology integration has not been aligned with contemporary conditions, revealing a significant pedagogical gap.To address this technological and theoretical disconnect, the study proposes a “Contemporary Curriculum Model Focused on a Digital Twin Approach,” which transforms surveying from a static tool documenting the past into a dynamic data model that shapes the future. This model, whose compatibility with the Higher Education Qualifications Framework of Türkiye (TYYÇ) field competencies has been analysed, serves as a methodological guide for the temporal and technological evolution of surveying education in interior architecture.
